Green living is buzz word these days. There are companies advertising their contribution in green earth effort. I am also sold on this idea of green living. Now more and more I remember to switch of lights when not in use, use paper instead of plastic, recycle paper and many more things.
How about a Green Software! I have chance to influence capital expense decision of our company. We just completed construction of our new office for Software development center in Indore (India). Instead of using air conditioner we are using evaporative air cooling plant. This should result in about 70% saving in electricity bill.
We have observed that in training rooms people tend to work in pair. Our new training room is designed to enable pair programming. This reduced number of heating stations (workstations) by 50%, resulting in reduced contribution towards global worming and reduced usage of high demand commodity i.e electricity.
Lots of windows and generous sky light helps reduce requirements for electrical lights. Natural lights coupled with energy efficient light fixtures will reduce the electricity requirements for lighting whole office by 70% as compared to conventional office.
Very soon we'll start looking at solar panels as alternate source of electricity.
